Constructed in 1973, Mallinckrodt Center and its encompassing locations (Edison Theatre, Bowles Plaza, and the Gargoyle) quickly became the social hub of the Danforth campus as an open space intended for student union and the performing arts. With its unmatched space, capacity, and location in the middle of the university’s campus, it served as a central spot for students to socialize, dine, perform, and experience all communal aspects of student life. Throughout its history, the Mallinckrodt Center has housed many of the university’s businesses, student organizations, and services, establishing its long-lasting legacy as the heart of student life and the social scene at WashU.
